Pathways to Citizenship

Standard Naturalization (10 years)

The standard pathway requires at least 10 years of continuous lawful residence in Austria, with at least 5 years holding a residence permit.

Requirements

  • 10 years continuous lawful residence in Austria
  • At least 5 years as a permanent resident
  • German language skills at B1 level (or B2 for reduced timeline)
  • Sufficient income (no social welfare in the last 3 years)
  • No serious criminal record
  • Positive attitude towards the Austrian Republic
  • Renunciation of previous citizenship (with exceptions)
  • Knowledge of Austrian history, democratic system, and the history of your federal state

Accelerated Naturalization (6 years)

The residence requirement can be reduced to 6 years if you demonstrate sustained personal and professional integration.

Conditions for 6-year pathway

  • German language skills at B2 level, OR
  • Sustained personal integration proven by voluntary engagement in social, cultural, or community organizations for at least 3 years
  • All other standard requirements must still be met

Citizenship through Marriage

Spouses of Austrian citizens may be eligible after a shorter residence period.

  • At least 6 years of continuous lawful residence in Austria
  • At least 5 years of marriage and living in a joint household
  • German language skills at B1 level
  • All other standard requirements

Entitlement after 30 Years

After 30 years of continuous lawful residence in Austria, you have a legal entitlement to citizenship (not discretionary).

Citizenship applications are handled by the provincial government authority (Landesregierung) in your federal state. In Vienna, this is MA 35.

Citizenship Test

The test covers basic knowledge of the democratic system and history of Austria, as well as the history of your federal state. Study materials are available for free from the ÖIF website.
